Another New Era?

sandcrabs July 2nd, 2009

As the NBA free agent period begins, many rumors have swirled around my beloved Portland Trailblazers.  The one with the most teeth is the courting of Hedo Turkoglu.  There are reports that he is currently in Portland having discussions with Kevin Pritchard (of the Pritch-slap fame) and Blazer management about signing a free agent contract.  Of course nothing can be finalized until the free agent signing moratorium is lifted on July 8.  However, with almost $10mil to spend in cap room there’s a very realistic chance Hedo will become a Trailblazer.  While this may not be a huge splash it does upgrade a serious need the Blazers have for an outside shooter.  Not really worth it?  Well, I have two words for that:  Robert Horry.

By most statistics one could term Horry a journeyman.  His career stats aren’t that impressive.  He’s averaged 7 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 42.5% shooting and 72.6% free throws.  I think another term is more appropriate: assassin.  How often did we see Horry make that last second 3-point shot that won playoff games?  After all, isn’t it all about the playoffs?  Does anybody know who holds the record for the NBA player with the most championships?  Okay, it’s Bill Russell with 11, but Robert Horry is tied for 7th all time with 7 championships.  Names like Jordan, Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson are all behind him.  Horry is one of only two players who have won a championship for 3 different teams.  Extra credit if you can name the other player.  Hint:  his nickname is Spider.

Hedo Turkoglu I believe is a better overall player than Horry so he will certainly help during the regular season which, by the way, the Blazers won 54 games.  However, his value this past post season was evident in his improvement during the finals.  His scoring increased by more than 6 points per game and his 3 point shooting percentage increased an amazing 10% from the first round to the finals.  He shot a blistering 43.8% from 3 point range in the finals.  He may not be the best player in the league but he’s the best option in free agency for a team that sorely needs that outside touch.

Another rumor is that the Blazers may go after Steve Nash.  One scenario has them trading Rudy Fernandez, Travis Outlaw and Jarryd Bayless for Nash.  I know that all the Rudy fans would become crazed lunatics at the thought of losing their hero, but think with your heads for one moment.  There are rumors that Fernandez is upset that Turkoglu may be coming to Portland, assumedly because that would mean fewer shots for Rudy.  If Hedo is signed, and the Nash trade becomes reality the window for a championship becomes immediate.  Think of a line-up with Nash and Roy as the guards, Aldridge and Turkoglo at forwards and Greg Oden in the middle.  We all know that Nash can pop the 3 pointer as well.  With the exception of Oden, the starting line-up is now deadly from the outside which will only open up the middle for Oden.  Note to all the Oden haters: Get the F off the kids back.  He’s only 21 and will be staring what is essentially his second NBA season.

How good was Kobe or Garnett in their second seasons?  They both are tremendous talents….now.  Being that he’s a 7-footer, Oden’s body is still trying to adjust to what he puts it through in an NBA season.  Do you want another Yao Ming?  Somebody with a career hanging by a thread because his body can’t keep up with the pounding it’s taken over the years?  Too much, too hard, too fast will destroy the kid.  He’s a good person with a lot of talent.  Put in the right situations and Oden is going to flourish.  If you have a problem with that then go root for the Warriors.

Now, back to the Nash/Turkoglu factor.  Outside shooting has been a problem for the Blazers for some time now.  Until he can prove he’s the answer, Martell Webster can not be anointed the savior.  Oh, he can sit in a chair 20 feet out and nail shots, but it’s obviously much more difficult with a defender running at your face.  Both Nash and Turkoglu can nail that outside shot with ease.  Also, the toughness factor.  Many times we’ve seen Nash’s face busted up and the guy just keeps coming back.  He may not be the biggest out on the floor, but nobody can question his heart.

Moves such as these makes me get even more excited about the upcoming season.  It remains to be seen as to what will actually happen, but it’s nice to be speculating on those things rather than placing bets on who will be the next Blazer busted for pot.  Yes, there are exciting times to be a Blazers’ fan and we should all roll around naked in it.  Well, maybe not naked, but let’s have some fun with it as we it may not last.

Breakthrough

sandcrabs June 23rd, 2009

It’s finally happened.  All season long we’ve been waiting for this blessed event.  A breakthrough of monumental proportions.  The only comparison that I have is the Boston Red Sox finally winning their first World Series in 88 years.  The monkey is now off the back.  Sandcrabs has posted a win in Rotoff Golf…..and it’s a major at that!  The champagne is flowing.  The goat has been butchered and cooked.

When the season began, during our Rotoff auction (which, by the way, the 2009 Draft Kit is now at a discounted rate) I had high hopes.  I was able to secure the defending Fed Ex Cup champion at an amount that really didn’t seem all that expensive.  Lesser golfers went for more.  However, as soon as the season began there was trouble.  That goat appeared and Vijay started having problems.  Just a few tournaments into the season it was revealed he had a bad knee and was going under the knife.  Crap.

Okay, not all was lost.  Dustin Johnson was coming off a great year and D.J. Trahan is a very able tour pro.  Well, that was about the extent of my top players.  Oh, I had a few role players such as Charles Howell III and Carl Pettersson, but nobody with a lot of punch.  Through our free agent draft I was able to secure Rory McIlroy and Ryan Moore.  Two very nice, young golfers.  Well, McIlroy started the year well but tailed off until this past weekend.  I had Ryan Moore for my final day and it took a bogey 17th from Phil to pull me into a tie with Left Power Squat (who incidentally is running away from the field this year) and secure the win via tie breakers.

With the win, I may still be in the cellar for overall standings, but I shot from dead last to 3rd place in money.  Just a few more wins and I’ll be able to over take that Squat and Leave it guy for the money lead.  Both Moore and McIlroy really showed something this weekend.  They’re both very long hitters and have pretty decent control.  This may just be the upswing that I’ve been looking for.  Oh, and I still get first choice in the next round for free agents.  There are some names out there who’ve been steadily improving of late.  The trick will be to dump some dead weight and hope the addition(s) make up for it.

To the rest of the field: watch out for Sandcrabs.  The only thing that can stop me now are Pac-10 officials who, thankfully, are nowhere near PGA golf courses.

Don’t take it away!!!!

Excellent stuff from the master, Shlink Lincoln.  In reading through Shlink’s post one question comes to my mind.  What the hell does the NFLPA have to gain from this?  Of course, it’s about the all-mighty dollar.  However, I think there’s something deeper going on here.  Something that every professional athlete has an abundance of.  Massive, freaking ego.

The NFLPA doesn’t need the money that having exclusive rights to this would bring.  Every one of those bast…..excuse me, individuals has plenty of money.  It’s all about having total control of things.  An ego the size of Mother Earth herself.  It’s not enough that we drones throw millions, upon millions of dollars at everything NFL.  Hell, I’m glad to do it.  No other sport can even compare.  But to try and monopolize something that MLB has already lost at?  What arrogance.

Don’t they have bigger things to worry about?  I believe that little thing called the Collective Bargaining Agreement is coming up very soon.  Now that’s a show of ego vs. ego.  It’s enough to make me want to vomit…..and I haven’t even had anything to drink yet.  You’ve got billionaires pissing and moaning at millionaires about money.  Huh?  Is a billion dollars not enough for you?  Holy crap!  I’m worried about things like putting food on my table and making sure the lights come on each time I flip that switch.  These guys are concerned that maybe they’ll have to cut back on taking that special jet to Europe, or maybe having to stay in this hemisphere for a vacation.

It’s difficult for the everyday fan to relate to the main issue here: money.  We pay to watch their craft.  We pay to read about it.  We pay dearly when our favorite team has an owner that has done so much for the sport but now is so out of touch one wonders if that stroke has actually happened.  We invest so much into our favorite pastime/sport/team that it becomes such an integral part of us.  Fantasy sports league are the last vestige that we have.  It’s the last thing that we have some control over.  Taking that away would be like forcing us to watch the WNBA.  Complete and utter torture.

I guess things could be worse.  I could be a Pac-10 football official.  But then, I’d have to be involved in all other scandals as well: 9/11; the Kennedy assassination; the snowplow play.  All sorts of conspiracies including the World Bank getting Obama elected.  (Like that one Shlink?)

Not that I think there’s much a chance for the NFLPA to win, but it’s something worth watching.  I guess I’ll have to live with Lisa Leslie coming up short on her dunks…..every time.  Crap.
