Breakthrough

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

It’s finally happened.  All season long we’ve been waiting for this blessed event.  A breakthrough of monumental proportions.  The only comparison that I have is the Boston Red Sox finally winning their first World Series in 88 years.  The monkey is now off the back.  Sandcrabs has posted a win in Rotoff Golf…..and it’s a major at that!  The champagne is flowing.  The goat has been butchered and cooked.

When the season began, during our Rotoff auction (which, by the way, the 2009 Draft Kit is now at a discounted rate) I had high hopes.  I was able to secure the defending Fed Ex Cup champion at an amount that really didn’t seem all that expensive.  Lesser golfers went for more.  However, as soon as the season began there was trouble.  That goat appeared and Vijay started having problems.  Just a few tournaments into the season it was revealed he had a bad knee and was going under the knife.  Crap.

Okay, not all was lost.  Dustin Johnson was coming off a great year and D.J. Trahan is a very able tour pro.  Well, that was about the extent of my top players.  Oh, I had a few role players such as Charles Howell III and Carl Pettersson, but nobody with a lot of punch.  Through our free agent draft I was able to secure Rory McIlroy and Ryan Moore.  Two very nice, young golfers.  Well, McIlroy started the year well but tailed off until this past weekend.  I had Ryan Moore for my final day and it took a bogey 17th from Phil to pull me into a tie with Left Power Squat (who incidentally is running away from the field this year) and secure the win via tie breakers.

With the win, I may still be in the cellar for overall standings, but I shot from dead last to 3rd place in money.  Just a few more wins and I’ll be able to over take that Squat and Leave it guy for the money lead.  Both Moore and McIlroy really showed something this weekend.  They’re both very long hitters and have pretty decent control.  This may just be the upswing that I’ve been looking for.  Oh, and I still get first choice in the next round for free agents.  There are some names out there who’ve been steadily improving of late.  The trick will be to dump some dead weight and hope the addition(s) make up for it.

To the rest of the field: watch out for Sandcrabs.  The only thing that can stop me now are Pac-10 officials who, thankfully, are nowhere near PGA golf courses.
