Excellent stuff from the master, Shlink Lincoln.  In reading through Shlink’s post one question comes to my mind.  What the hell does the NFLPA have to gain from this?  Of course, it’s about the all-mighty dollar.  However, I think there’s something deeper going on here.  Something that every professional athlete has an abundance of.  Massive, freaking ego.

The NFLPA doesn’t need the money that having exclusive rights to this would bring.  Every one of those bast…..excuse me, individuals has plenty of money.  It’s all about having total control of things.  An ego the size of Mother Earth herself.  It’s not enough that we drones throw millions, upon millions of dollars at everything NFL.  Hell, I’m glad to do it.  No other sport can even compare.  But to try and monopolize something that MLB has already lost at?  What arrogance.

Don’t they have bigger things to worry about?  I believe that little thing called the Collective Bargaining Agreement is coming up very soon.  Now that’s a show of ego vs. ego.  It’s enough to make me want to vomit…..and I haven’t even had anything to drink yet.  You’ve got billionaires pissing and moaning at millionaires about money.  Huh?  Is a billion dollars not enough for you?  Holy crap!  I’m worried about things like putting food on my table and making sure the lights come on each time I flip that switch.  These guys are concerned that maybe they’ll have to cut back on taking that special jet to Europe, or maybe having to stay in this hemisphere for a vacation.

It’s difficult for the everyday fan to relate to the main issue here: money.  We pay to watch their craft.  We pay to read about it.  We pay dearly when our favorite team has an owner that has done so much for the sport but now is so out of touch one wonders if that stroke has actually happened.  We invest so much into our favorite pastime/sport/team that it becomes such an integral part of us.  Fantasy sports league are the last vestige that we have.  It’s the last thing that we have some control over.  Taking that away would be like forcing us to watch the WNBA.  Complete and utter torture.

I guess things could be worse.  I could be a Pac-10 football official.  But then, I’d have to be involved in all other scandals as well: 9/11; the Kennedy assassination; the snowplow play.  All sorts of conspiracies including the World Bank getting Obama elected.  (Like that one Shlink?)

Not that I think there’s much a chance for the NFLPA to win, but it’s something worth watching.  I guess I’ll have to live with Lisa Leslie coming up short on her dunks…..every time.  Crap.
